Aaditya Datar

PhD Researcher in Quantum Optics and Information

About

Hi! I am Aaditya Datar, a PhD researcher at the Quantum Optics and Information Laboratory (QOIL), a part of the Queensland Quantum and Advanced Technologies Research Institute (QUATRI) in Griffth University, Queensland, as well as the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Performance and Integration (QPI). I am a BS-MS graduate in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune.

My current work is mainly motivated by some very intriguing ideas in the foundations of quantum theory: Bell nonlocality, Wigner and his Friends, and other fundamental ideas that straddle the boundary between physics, metaphysics, and philosophy. In addition to this, I also try and implement the physical consequences of such thought experiments into technological applications using quantum optics: device-independent randomness certification, quantum key distribution, and correlations in quantum networks, to name a few.

Previosuly, I have worked on topics in high-energy physics and quantum information: studying what mode entanglement means for fields that mix and oscillate among different "flavours" like the axion-photon system, and a master's thesis project on the black hole information paradox in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

In my free time, I like to consume unhealthy amounts of infotainment: anything that will give me the extra edge in trivia! This leads to funny convergences, like this parody of Robert Frost's famous poem "The Road Not Taken" written for quantum enthusiasts.
The Road(s) (Not) Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
Which path to take, perplexed, there I stood.
For although each was to lead to the ferryman, to the same end;
Witnessing both journeys together was Nature's law I couldn't bend.

If only I could traverse all these paths together!
Not be bound to picking one over the other.
A life, given by a sum over all events and histories;
Over all possible experiences, all possible mysteries!

Or maybe this free will is simply an illusion.
The ability to make my own decision, a beautiful delusion.
From the inception of time, all has been perfectly defined;
Piloted by an imaginary wave, I coast through a life predetermined.

Or maybe there exist countless other mes!
Living, breathing and persisting; even if I were to cease.
Combined, we exhaust all of my life's possibilities.
And yet continue to lead our lives unaware of each other's realities.

The classics deny embarking on such an extraordinary adventure;
Taking every path is prohibited, say both Newton's physics and Frost's literature.
And although regret of the past and apprehension of the future are inevitable vices;
We endevour to live in the present, to accept and embrace our choices.
For distant is the answer to Nature's law, we so desperately seek,
To know whether the cat was dead, alive or both, before we take a peek!
